 | It has always been fascinating to me that hermaphroditeism is the standard we live with. Not that we haven't overpopulated the world to the brink of catastrophe as it is, but for a species needing to expand it's population for example on some newly settled planet in the not too distant future, the ability for a couple to both be able to impregnate each other would greatly speed up colonization and provide for an equal distribution of labor (and the other labor too) among the population. While heterosexuality as a procreative methodology has worked all too well for us, it does require a division of labor based on gender. How about a division of labor based on life's needs instead.

 | 'Hermaphrodite' means have the genitals of both sexes. Although it IS common in some animals, it's extrememly unusual in humans for obvious reasons. Note that 'chicks with dicks' (for instance) are NOT true hermaphrodites....they are male with some secondary female features. |

Looking at the Wikipedia article on Intersexuality, they define it as "intermediate or atypical combinations of physical features that usually distinguish male from female." According to the figures they cite there, "1 percent of live births exhibit some degree of sexual ambiguity. Between 0.1% and 0.2% of live births are ambiguous enough to become the subject of specialist medical attention, including surgery to disguise their sexual ambiguity." Traditionally, obvious signs of sexual ambiguity are surgically corrected in infancy. This is why you are unlikely to see pictures of any true hermaphrodites. |
