If he's gotta wear something, my first choice would be a thong. Second would be a bikini brief, preferably in some interesting color. And the classic tighty whitie looks really hot with the right man inside. Basic boxers are nice with a suit or other dress pants. As for square cut, or boxer briefs or any of the other long line underpants, forget it. They just cover too much skin.
