PARIS — Former All Blacks flanker Jerry Collins and his wife Alana Madill died after their car was struck by a bus on a highway outside the southern French town of Beziers on Friday.

Police officer Thierry Duffau said Madill was driving while 34-year-old Collins was in the back seats.

Highway police in Beziers said their b@by daughter Ayla was gravely injured in the crash about a half-hour drive from Narbonne, where Collins had been playing since January for the town's second division club. Ayla was airlifted to a hospital in Montpellier in what French police called a "very serious" condition.

No one in the bus, which transported 21 people, was harmed.

According to initial findings by police, Madill lost control of the car around 3 a.m. and hit security barriers before stopping on the slow lane of the highway. The bus coming behind could not avoid the car.

"The news has shocked us all, and our thoughts are with Jerry and Alana's families at this terribly sad time," New Zealand Rugby general manager Neil Sorensen said. "We offer our deepest condolences to them, and will support them as they come to terms with this devastating news."

I don't follow sports and only look quickly thru the sports section of our newspaper to see if there are any good photos of cute athletes. So maybe this topic has been discussed and I didn't see it.

Here goes. Why do basketball players now wear such dreadful uniforms? Knee length baggy shorts and loose fitting tops. Part of the fun of sports is to show off a good physique and show as much skin as possible. Part of the fun of watching sports is to SEE as much skin as possible.

I guess the shorts got longer because so many players wear long line underpants and the uniform has to cover them. What's with that? Do they really need anything more than a jock underneath. For that matter do they even need a jock? Why not go commando? Guys play basketball nude all the time.

I never got golf either! Until I was in my late 40's and would golf with my Dad whenever I would visit. He loaned me his clubs, told me distances and clubs to use, hints at driving and putting. The courses we played were always different and very lush and green or totally brown with crappy 'greens'. It was a different world than any I had experienced...I was never very good, but I have loved golf ever since...and my Dad...If you really want to know who you are, try golfing.
