I'm not completely sure, but if I'm not mistaken there is an expiration date on comments. After a while they just get deleted.

If I'm wrong, there is probably someone else who does know how it works.

Admin did answer the very same question just the other day......

Comments are automatically deleted after 180 days due to database performance.
